Eufaula Tigers are Champs of Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic

On New Year’s Eve, instead of sitting in front of my television, I decided to go see a champion crowned at the Dothan Civic Center. This was the 11th Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic, and as usual it was a great event put on by all the great people there. The Dothan Tigers came into to this event looking to win their 5th consecutive. They would be knocked off in the semifinals by city rival, the Northview Cougars. On the other side of the bracket many believed that the Abbeville Yellow Jackets would advance, but the Eufaula Tigers had other ideas.

Consolation Game:
Abbeville 45, Dothan 38

Abbeville made a furious comeback in the third quarter after being down 30-22 at the break. Abbeville outscored Dothan 13-2 in the third, and outscored the Tigers 23-
8 in the entire second half. Abbeville took the lead and never trailed again at the 2:17 mark in the third, when guard Jeremiah Harris hit a free throw to put them up 33-32. At one point in the fourth, Abbeville did get a ten-point lead at 43-33 with 2:48 left in the game. The closest Dothan would get was 43-38 with 46.5 left, but it seemed a little too late. Abbeville was led in the game by Jeremiah Harris with nine points. Guards Terrance Hollins and Jaylan Coxon both chipped in with eight points each. Despite being on the losing end in the game, Tyson Williams for Dothan scored 17 points with three 3-point shots made.

Championship Game
Eufaula 71, Northview 61

There is only one thing the same about the 2016 Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic as the past four: the Tigers were the ones to stand victorious. However, this time the Tigers were from Eufaula. In the eleven-year history of the tournament, it was the first time that Eufaula had won it. Eufaula came out against the Northview Cougars looking like a team that would not be denied. They lead 40-25 at halftime, and held a 24-point edge with under 3:00 in the second quarter. Northview came out in the second half with a brand-new attitude, and went on a 12-2 run to get within five with 5:38 left in the third. Northview would get a huge three by guard Harrison Holland at the end of the third to get within three, 50-47. The final act would be owned by Tony Johnson and the Eufaula Tigers. They opened the quarter with a 10-2 run to go up by 60-52. They never looked back. Johnson would score 12 of his 22 points, and every time Northview tried to make a run it was held off. Northview in the game was led by Terrell Harris with 17 points.
