Freedom Speaks 2020
“Freedom Speaks: The Call of Lincoln and King” is a speech competition for area high school students celebrating the invaluable words of two great Americans. The oratory contest was held at Wiregrass Church on Sunday, January 19th.
Over 30 students from area high schools participated in a preliminary competition in December and ten finalists were selected to compete in the Freedom Speaks event. These students presented either Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address with excerpts from his Second Inaugural, or an edited version of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. In addition, each student presented their own personal speech.
The mission of this competition was to challenge, encourage and motivate the students to develop a better understanding of history and its application today while providing an avenue to personally excel in competition.
