From the Publisher (December 2015)
Man, has it ever been a busy month. It seems like November and December never have enough days in them. Between the family gatherings and the missed days in the office, it can feel daunting to look at your to-do list. A lot of people, including myself, get so wrapped up in their jobs and their own personal productivity that it can sometimes take away from the significance of the holidays. There are company parties, friends coming into town, family coming into town and the seemingly endless amount of gifts to buy for your loved ones. Sometimes you just have to stop and appreciate your particular situation.
Everything in life is so temporary. Toys break, friends move and children become adults, but it’s the way we sit back and take hold to those memories that is so important. I feel like we could all benefit from just focusing on what we have rather than what we don’t have. People get so wound up thinking about materialistic things that it ruins relationships, strains emotional availability and that behavior can sometimes become obsessive. Some long-term bonds can be wrecked by being distracted by inanimate objects rather than intrigued by life. This holiday season, even though in this day and age it is difficult, I challenge you to just slow down a little and focus on the now. Don’t sweat work deadlines, don’t be side tracked by stress…just kick back and enjoy your life.
So many people ask me what our paper is based on and every time I reply with the same phrase, “quality of life”. Every issue we put together is purposefully stuffed with things to do and experiences that you shouldn’t miss. Our staff is constantly putting together information to help you enjoy the Wiregrass more fully. Our advertisers are all supporters of The Local because they share the common belief that people want to know what’s happening, and people want to be what’s happening.
In the following pages we have listed the ultimate guide to the holidays in the Wiregrass. You can start by hitting up Holly Branch Tree Farms for your decor. Then flip a page or two to find out the best places to take your family to get a proper taste of the area. We have even listed out our favorite gifts that can only be found around here. We work hard so you can enjoy more time with loved ones creating new traditions while upholding old ones. I hope that everyone has a safe holiday season and I cannot wait to see what 2016 has in store for the Wiregrass!
