Hiss Golden Messenger
Hiss Golden Messenger, and its chief architect MC Taylor, have that something special. The late
great David Bowie once described their sound as, “mystical country, like an eerie yellowing
photograph”. Based out of Durham, North Carolina, the band has released a string of albums
each garnering accolades of praise and respect from fans and other musicians respectively.
Embarking on a solo tour this winter, Taylor will be making the first stop at Southern Social Table
& Tap in Dothan, AL on February 11.
Brad Clayton – Hey! Good morning, MC. How is life your way? Getting ready for the tour?
MC Taylor – Good morning! Things are going well. Yeah, man! It’s been awhile since I’ve played
in this kind of format of just me. Really since the start of Hiss Golden Messenger. It’ll just be me
and a guitar.
BC – Are you looking forward to going back to that original format?
Taylor – I think so. (Laughs). I have avoided playing solo for quite a while now. It’l be interesting.
I’ll be playing songs that I don’t normally play, taking them back to their origin. So essentially just
stripping them down to their bones.
BC – Will you be doing new songs as well as your established material?
Taylor – Yep. I’ve got a big bag of songs. I’m hoping I can remember them all. Some of these
haven’t been played in a very long time. Some I’ve never played.
BC – Southern Social is a very intimate setting. Not like a theater or concert hall, but rather like a
living room that serves drinks and dinner. Will you be taking requests?
Taylor – I’ll have a setlist before I start playing, so it won’t be just an open request show.
However, I am open to playing songs that people want to hear. So if there are certain songs that
people really are wanting to hear, I will do my best to accommodate. Sometimes people ask for
songs that I recorded years ago and I won’t remember the song, or I’ve only played it once on
YouTube or something. (Laughs). I’m going to do my best!
BC – Your Instagram account is one of my favorites that I follow. Your interaction with your
followers is truly unique. You constantly post poetry, music, books, and other art that seems to
inspire you, which may then turn someone else on to it who might be unawares. Is that
something that you consciously aspire to?
Taylor – Thanks, man. Well, social media is a public facade. It’s concentrated on who we really
want to be, so we cultivate these images to represent that. When in reality there is a lot more to
my life. So I use it to share things I love. Things that inspire me. Things that move me. As far as
responding to my fans: do you follow Patti Smith?
BC – I do! Her feed is incredible!
Taylor – Exactly! She is just the coolest. She interacts with people everyday in such a positive
way. It’s amazing.
BC – For all its negativities, do you think social media can be used for good? The
aforementioned sharing art, I think, is one of the best things about Instagram. Accounts like
yours have shown me artists that I may not have otherwise heard.
Taylor – Do you remember when you were a kid and you would go to these mom and pop record
BC – Yes! It’s one of my favorite memories. I fear those days are gone forever, sadly.
Taylor – They are. But Instagram is the new way. In those record stores the knowledge of new
music or artists came from someone else who got it from someone else. That is how we came
to be hip to new music. But information is now so much more immediate. So there is still the joy
in finding a trail. I feel the impulse to share will be around forever. Sharing something that
means something to us is a way to connect with people on a deeper level. It will always be
BC – Agree completely. So what does 2019 hold for Hiss Golden Messenger, aside from this
Taylor – It’s going to be a busy one! (Laughs). There will be a new Hiss Golden Messenger
album out this summer. It is finished. And then there are a few collaborations in the works as
well. I’m looking forward to this year and what will come with it.
BC – Sounds great! I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to do this, MC. Really looking
forward to hearing you in Dothan in February.
Taylor – Thank you! It’s my pleasure. Looking forward to playing Dothan. It’ll be my first time.
Make plans now to come out and have an intimate evening of song an spirits with one of the
best songwriters today.
