New year, new Netflix list
With the holiday season coming to a close, what better way to bring in the new year with a fresh list of comedies brought to you by none other than myself and Netflix? I know, I know, Netflix can be pretty hit or miss, but I hope this guide of comedies makes it a little easier to navigate and compile an epic list of must-sees. I must credit myself as an experienced binge watcher of all things funny. So take my word for it – or don’t, but you probably should.
The list comprised is in no specific order and pretty personal to my taste. Enjoy!
1. Tom Segura: Mostly Stories
What a true gem. I don’t think we are worthy of this hilarious man. I first saw his stand-up on Netflix a few years ago. Since that first time, I have probably watched all his stand-ups available on Netflix at least five times a piece and went to Atlanta to see him live. I know that I said I was not going to go in any kind of order, but he really is my number one. His humor is real, raw, and a bit vulgar, but worth every second.
2. Jack Whitehall: Travels with my Father
This two season series is so worth the watch. Jack Whitehall, stand-up comedian by trade, takes his straight-laced father on adventures all over the country. I did not expect to laugh as hard as I did, but I am pretty sure my neighbors were annoyed that I was screaming with laughter over this oddly hilarious duo. I was texting friends after the first episode informing them they had to watch this series and they weren’t disappointed either.
3. Iliza: Confirmed Kills
I am not proud to say that it is a little harder for me to get into female comedy. Usually it goes off into left field for me, and I am trying to figure out what is going on. But Iliza brings comedy front and center in this special. She is not afraid to be flat-out honest and even talks truth about a little party goblin that most women have within. C’mon ladies, you know we’re guilty!
4. Theo Von: No Offense
I mean of course it’s offensive- if you let it offend you! Maybe it’s his thick southern accent or maybe it’s the off-the-wall stories, either way this dude’s crude humor brings in some serious laughs. From time to time, I will fast forward to my favorite joke in the sketch- just to bring some sunshine in my day.
5. Tom Segura: Completely Normal
Here he is again, making you laugh just as hard as he did in Mostly Stories. He had to make my list twice, it is too good to miss out on. If I do nothing else through this list, I hope I can bring others to appreciate this comedic genius as much as I do. Once again, his bits are a bit vulgar, but if you can get past that, it’s worth all the laughs.
Another series, but it needs to be on your list. It is comedy with a dash of drama, but it keeps you laughing more than anything else. It follows Sam and his family in their daily lives. Sam is on the autism spectrum, but is high functioning. He is attempting to find love and become more independent, all while dealing with the normal monotony of day-to-day life. I was actually very surprised that this show brought a lot of joy and humor with it.
7. Aziz Ansari Live at Madison Square Garden/Master of None
Although this is an older bit, it’s one you want to make sure you’ve seen. This well seasoned comedian and Parks and Rec vet brings funny to another level, selling out MSG. I am actually gonna give you a twofer in this one. You also need to check out Master of None. I mean it won an Emmy, so you know I ain’t lying!
8. Demetri Martin: The Overthinker
Not my typical preference of comedy, but I must say I was truly impressed by this stand-up. He kept the humor rolling. His simple puns and sketches really stole the show. He is known for his one-liners- which can easily lose an audience in some cases, but this sketch really kept it’s game up. I laughed out loud way more than I anticipated.
9. Judd Apatow: The Return
After a 25 year break, this man brings it back with solid gold. However, he wasn’t completely silent for 25 years. He brought us some of the great comedy classics, such as: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Trainwreck– to name a few. Clearly, the man has talent! But don’t take my word for it- watch it for yourself! And if for some reason you live under a rock and haven’t seen the movies I listed above, check those out too!
10. Bert Kreischer: Secret Time
Tom Segura’s bestie had to make the list. I first heard of Bert when a friend shared a post of his on Instagram. I was instantly hooked. This overly comfortable shirtless dude can’t help but make you laugh. Bert shares many “secrets” during his skit that will keep you rolling with laughter.
New Year, New Me? Whatever, more like New Year, New Netflx list. Get on it, you’ve got some TV to watch!
